A former Governor of Lagos State in the second republic (1979-1983) Lateef Jakande, has said that the issue of housing should always be a major priority no matter the economic or political climate of the country.

He made this known during an interview with Bullnet in its current edition of January-March 2018.

In his statement; “My advice is that whatever the economic conditions or political conditions, housing is a priority and it’s a duty, your duty to provide it. So far, I believe that it is being done. I hope and pray that whatever the economic conditions, housing will be given the appropriate priority.”

Commenting on the efforts of the present government on housing, Jakande said that as far as he was concerned, the government, at all levels are trying their best, noting that the policies they were formulating would continue to achieve housing target for Nigeria.

He said: “I think the Federal Government and many of the state governments have given due attention to the matter of housing of the citizens of Nigeria.

“The Federal Government has a Federal Housing Authority and practically every state has a housing authority, which had enabled their residents to acquire housing facilities, since independence,” he added.

Jakande, who was the Minister for Works and Housing between December 1993 to February 1995, advised the government to make use of the housing programmes he initiated, adding that those policies were still practicable.
