The Chartered Project Management Institute of Nigeria (CPMIN) on Thursday resolved to end the high cost of construction and increased rate of project abandonment across the country through effective project management.

Chuks Omeife and Solomon Adedapo, President and General Secretary of CPMIN respectively, made this known in a communique jointly signed at the end of an Executive Council Meeting of the institute.

The institute said that there was a pool of certified and potential project managers in the country that needed proper regulation in practice and conduct to enhance the impact on project delivery.

“The haphazard manner in which projects have been continuously executed in the country is the basic reason why cost of construction is high and thus resulting to abandonment of projects across the country.

“The citizens must benefit and derive maximum value for money spent on construction works, especially for the massive infrastructure and housing projects embarked on by government.

“The project management principles of strategic planning, detailed programming, monitoring, resource allocation and effective risk management must be entrenched in the public procurement system to enhance project delivery,’’ it said.

CPMIN applauded the efforts, determination and success of the bill sponsored and promoted by the Chartered Institute of Project Managers of Nigeria which President Muhammadu Buhari recently signed into law.

The institute noted that it was honoured to align with the Certified Institute of Project Managers of Nigeria and extended a hand of fellowship in promotion of project management as a distinct profession in Nigeria.

CPMIN urged project management associations to come together and give necessary support in entrenching project management in all sectors of the economy for value addition in project delivery process.

“Project management is important because it ensures what is being delivered is right and will deliver real value.

“It ensures proper expectations are set around what can be delivered, by when and for how much. It also ensures the quality of whatever is being delivered, consistently hits the mark.

“We look forward to the roll out of Chartered Institute of Project Managers of Nigeria as a body that represents the soul of Project Management as a profession in Nigeria, ‘’ it said.
