Lagos state Government has confirmed that it is committed to reforming the transportation sector in the state as it has told the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to prepare the coming changes in the sector.
The Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, dropped this hint on Wednesday while inaugurating the new NURTW state secretariat at Agege, Lagos.
Ambode, who was represented by the Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, urged the union to co-operate with the state government, in order to be relevant to the new policy that is geared towards the transformation of Lagos to a mega city.
“We support the chairman on his efforts to bring a new look to the union in Lagos State. But development goes beyond edifice and building structures; there must be adequate preparation for new government policy on transportation by the union.
“Government has no plan to leave anybody or union behind in its plan to make the state a mega city. So, I appeal to the union to key into government’s plan and prepare for the coming changes in transportation sector,” he said.
Ambode also gave kudos to the union for playing appreciable role in the the youth employment in the society, saying that they have helped to reduce crime.
In his response, the National President, NURTW, Nojeem Yasin, congratulated the state union on the secretariat, adding that the state union needs to give more support to the state union chairman, Tajudeen Agbede.
Agbede, in his speech, commended Ambode on the for improving infrastructure in the state.
“The construction of several flyovers and new roads across the state has helped to reduce traffic congestion during the peak periods. As partner in progress with the state government, we are always ready to contribute our quota to the success of the government,” he said.
