In the face of constant complaints of epileptic power supply, Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, has urged to President Muhammadu Buhari to revoke the operational licence of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC.
He made this known on Tuesday while speaking with journalists in Benin.
According to him, the call became necessary to rescue Edo residents from the continuous poor service being delivered to the people.
He complained that upon the poor service, residents are harassed weekly by BEDC to pay for electricity it did not supply.
Obaseki said Edo people deserve a better service provider than BEDC, adding that Edo State hosts Azura Power plant which generates over 700MW of electricity to the national grid.
“This is Christmas that families should be enjoying uninterrupted electricity supply in the state, but BEDC is unable to live up to the minimum expectation of providing electricity,” he said.
He lamented that forcing electricity consumers to pay for services they did not enjoy with estimated bills is tantamount to corruption.
He said that Nigerians in Borno and Kaduna states are celebrating uninterrupted power supply while Edo people are in unending darkness.
According to him, in as much as he is not a believer in speculation, he is however constrained to believe that BEDC is on a mission to sabotage the developmental efforts of his administration.
“There can be no better time to enjoy electricity than during the Christmas holiday and only an enemy of progress will make Edo people spend the holidays in darkness,” he said.
